Songs for the Passover/Easter Season

Also Featured at Waxing Poetically.

Today marks Both the Christian Good Friday celebration and the second day of the Jewish Passover. In honor of this occasion, this week’s Articles of Faith segment Waxing Poetically will acknowledge both faiths in song. Some of the following may be considered to be a bit on the liberal side of things, but it is in no way meant to diminish the sacredness of the season. Well wishes are extended to all who celebrate!

Featured Video: DJML’s “Drop It Like It’s Hendrix” (Some Adult Language)

Archived from December 9, 2008

Check out this splendorous mashing and meshing of two cultural classics as hip hip meets psychedelic blues rock as DJML and Just Right Productions present Snoop Dogg’s “Drop it Like It’s Hot” (2004) with Jimi Hendrix’s “All along the Watchtower” (1968) in a hot bubbling cauldron of funk, voodoo and musically phantasmic euphoria that is “Drop it like it’s Hendrix.” The video moves seamlessly though every note and samples pieces of each artist’s original footage with no more high technology than a college freshman’s AV editing project and yet it yields a thrill that bumps and riffs its way to greatness with each float-away box edit and kaleidoscopic, screensaver-esque laser show!

Looking Back at Roni Size’s “Brown Paper Bag” (1997)

Looking Back at Roni Size’s “Brown Paper Bag” (1997)

Achived fro November 7, 2008

As your humble blogger, I must stress this is one of my all time favorite videos ever! It’s a classic piece form UK drum and bass pioneer Roni Size from Size’s 1997 album New Forms. The premise, however elementary, is one that works - a dimly lit street scene with planes eager to depart overhead and pedestrians scurrying about their routines of the day as they walk against midtown traffic in the hope that they can reach their destinations in the time allotted. Suddenly, a bassline and strange, psychotropic-like audio slow down reality as it begins to tic and hum with the rolling, percussion and authoritarian, omnipotent vocals. Both sound and visuals are fused nicely with deliberate jump cut edits to create the appearance of a stutter step in the movement of objects throughout the piece while the music plays seamlessly along side it.

Watch Trickster Tom as he pretends to be bashfully unprepared to battle L.A. hip hip star Xzibit and then proceeds to rip into X like a fiery tornado! Enjoy!

“My Letter to Hip Hop” by Bridget Gray (2000)

Archived from November 25, 2008 at Waxing Poetically “My Letter to Hip Hop” by Bridget Gray (2000)

Yes, hip hop: the beats, the rhymes, the verses and the eloquence are moving some to new plateaus of greatness. Well, in an ideal world, that’s what poetic waxers like me would wish hip hop to do. Yet, the reality of mainstream, popular hip hop has lead my ears to bleed with sorrow at what the genre has become. Back in the 1980’s golden years Rakim told listeners “I used to be a stick-up kid…/But now I learned to earn ’cause I’m righteous!” But by the mid 90s Dr. Dre told of America’s t youth that “Bitches ain’t sh*t! on his 1992 song of same name. Now just a few weeks ago, I heard a song called “I’m in Love with Money!” Hip hop has undoubtedly gone a bit astray from its political and social change roots.

Hip hop has gone from this:

Eric B and Rakim “Paid in Full” (1987)

[Rakim]

Thinkin of a master plan
Cuz ain’t nuthin but sweat inside my hand
So I dig into my pocket, all my money is spent
So I dig deeper but still comin up with lint
So I start my mission- leave my residence
Thinkin how could I get some dead presidents

I need money, I used to be a stick-up kid
So I think of all the devious things I did
I used to roll up, this is a hold up, ain’t nuthin’ funny
Stop smiling, be still, don’t nuthin’ move but the money
But now I learned to earn cos I’m righteous
I feel great! so maybe I might just
Search for a 9 to 5, if I strive
Then maybe I’ll stay alive
So I walk up the street whistlin this
Feelin out of place cos, man, do I miss
A pen and a paper, a stereo, a tape of
Me and Eric B, and a nice big plate of
Fish, which is my favorite dish
But without no money it’s still a wish
Cos I don’t like to dream about gettin paid
So I dig into the books of the rhymes that I made
To now test to see if I got pull
Hit the studio, cos I’m paid in full
