Charlie Rose discusses Opera and ‘Doctor Atomic’

Peter Gelb is the general manager Of New York City’s Metropolitan Opera and is by his own admission, not an Opera traditionalist. In early 2008, Gelb set out to make opera accessible to the masses. He did so by coordinating a series of movie theater screenings in HD quality and allowing the form to be taken out of its Bourgeois connotations in into a certain modern rock and roll era. Gelb’s latest endeavor Doctor Atomic, a dramatic retelling of America’s Manhattan Project of the 1930s and 40s, The piece is composed by avid Jimi Hendrix and Bjork fan John Adams while film maker Penny Woolcock brings a cinematic depth for the newest of opera lovers. Gelb and Woolcock discuss the ins and outs of how to demystify the art form with Charlie Rose in this 30 minute interview.
